Dr. W. Apoutou N’DJIN, Ph.D., Research Associate in Biomedical Engineering & Physics at the Laboratory of Therapeutic Applications of Ultrasound (LabTAU, French National Institute of Health and Medical Research, University of Lyon, France), was recently presented the International Society of Therapeutic Ultrasound’s (ISTU) Frederic LIZZI Early Career Award at the 19th International Symposium for Therapeutic Ultrasound. One of ISTU’s most prestigious awards, the Frederic LIZZI Early Career Award was established in 2008 to honor Dr. Frederic L. LIZZI, a pioneer in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic applications of ultrasound. Since then, it is presented to one recipient annually (except in special circumstances) for their contributions to therapeutic ultrasound. The recipient should be within 10 years of their terminal degree and is selected among a pool of nominees by ISTU’s Organizing Committee and Board.

The event was held in Barcelona (Spain) at the occasion of the first joint meeting of the ISTU Society and the European Focused Ultrasound Charitable Society (EUFUS). The Symposium has been held at the historic building of the Universitat de Barcelona, one of the most emblematic sites in the city centre, which was constructed in 1863 by the architect Elies Rogent.

This year’s LIZZI Award was shared by two researchers, Dr. W. Apoutou N’DJIN, Ph.D. (LabTAU, INSERM, CLB, Univ Lyon, France) and Dr. Kevin J. HAWORTH, Ph.D. (College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati, United States). Following ISTU tradition, LIZZI award recipients delivered the LIZZI Award Lecture and shared a dedicated session with the 2019 FRY Award (Pr. Chrit MOONEN, Ph.D., Division of Imaging, Uninversity Mecial Center Utrecht, Netherland) and the 2019 PIONEER Award (Pr. Leonid GAVRILOV, Ph.D., Andreyev Acoustics Institute, Physical Acoustics, University of Moscow, Russia).

W. Apoutou N’DJIN delivered a LIZZI Lecture entitled " A healthy future for focal conformal therapeutic ultrasound" and highlighted some of their contributions in the development of new ultrasound targeting strategies and technologies in surgery and interventional radiology, as well as their openness to methods coming from neurosciences for studying ultrasound neurostimulation (https://eufusistu.atlantacongress.org/program/)
